Barbie, the original fashion doll, was created by toy designer Ruth Handler. Ruth and her husband Elliot founded the Mattel Corporation in 1945. Ruth got the idea for Barbie while watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls.
Barbie was introduced at the Toy Fair in New York City in 1959 where she certainly was not the most popular girl at the show. However, when the doll was offered for sale on March 9, 1959, she was an instant hit with little girls everywhere! You go, girl!
Barbie’s curvaceous figure and love of fashion has made her the target of feminist advocates. Where do you and your students stand on the issue?
Have a great weekend!
