Fun, Anyone?

Hope sign Mona

I don’t think I’d get an argument from anyone reading this post that teaching today is an incredibly hard job.  And when you teach FACS, you have so many additional responsibilities like maintaining equipment, purchasing supplies, sponsoring FCCLA chapter activities.  The list goes on and on!  As much as I would like to relieve you of some of those responsibilities, that’s not possible.  Sorry.  What I can do is try to bring a little fun into your day and that’s exactly what I plan to do in 2013!

The Fresh FACS theme for 2013 is Put the Fun Back into FACS.  Now I know that everyone’s idea of fun is a little different, but this will be FACS fun.  We’re planning several contests and activities that will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your FACS knowledge, your creativity and even your ability to solve puzzles.  You can even include your students in many of the activities!

Let Fresh FACS put a little play in your day!  It’s all in good fun but there is a bonus.  When you play along, you may win one of our prize packages.  Prizes include resources for your classroom as well as a few things just for teacher.

In order to be a part of the fun, all you need to do is become a member of our Fresh FACS social circle.  You become a member of that circle when you:

The fun starts January 2013!  Don’t miss out!  More details to follow soon.

Getting Settled

This is my first official post since October 17.  That’s the date we officially began the process of moving our website and this blog to a new location with a totally new format.  After a few years with the same look and function, it just felt like we needed to make a change.  So after many, many hours of programming, refining and tweaking the move is finally complete.  So what do you think?  Did we do okay?  We’d love to hear to hear what you think of our new digs!

The only posts that I moved from the old blog are ones associated with the FACS Soundtrack project.   You’ll be able to access the FACS Soundtrack Playlists from the drop down menu under What’s On You Mind?  The other categories on this blog are accessible from that same menu.

Speaking of the FACS Soundtrack, the new blog format allowed me to add a cool new audio feature.  If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you’ll find the FACS Soundtrack Sampler.  I’ll be able to share various songs from the Soundtrack that you can listen to them while you check out my post.  Fun, right?  The current selection is the song Christmas Cookies by George Strait.  You have to give it a listen!

One other new feature I think you’ll enjoy is the Good Reads display.  In this area you’ll find books that I recommend for use in your classroom or just reading for pleasure.  Check it out!  You might find a good book to read as you relax by the fire and enjoy your Christmas break.

I hope you’ll find our new website and blog interesting and useful.  Check back with us often.  We have some fun and exciting new features to share with you in 2013!  Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Holidays!

FACS Rocks in 2012!

Today our FACS Tune-Up Project officially begins!  Remember, our goal is to create a soundtrack for the entire FACS curriculum by sharing a song related to a different FACS concept each weekday of 2012.  If I’m successful, that will mean creating a directory of 260 songs that you can use to make your FACS classroom the most rockin’ area in your school.  Don’t forget that you are welcome to suggest songs throughout the year!  Just post a comment with title of the song that you would use in your classroom along with a link to help us locate it on the web.

Since it’s January, I thought we’d start with a topic that is always on everyone’s mind this time of year–getting in shape.  It’s a modern American tradition!  We overeat throughout the holidays and then struggle to take the extra pounds off in January.  So this week, we’ll be looking for music related to the topics of:

  • healthy eating
  • losing weight
  • exercise
  • shaping up

The first song in our FACS soundtrack is Healthy Body by Operation Ivy.  Get ready, because this one really moves.

Lots of topics for discussion with this one!

Expensive vitamin pills and wheat germ on your windowsill
Your schedule’s hectic and you’ve got no time to kill
Earning money and you’re spending it the right way
Just in such a rush you don’t know if it’s night or day

5:30 get up, run run run
Then you work eight hours
Slaving under the gun
Little world is based on lies lies lies
Always rushing but you’re never ever satisfied

Healthy body sick mind
You’re working overtime
Healthy body sick mind
Too hectic, too hectic
Healthy body sick mind
"Why don’t you just unwind?"
It’s just a matter of time
Sick body sick mind!

The money you spend on running shoes could feed me for a week
Your plans are laid so well you can’t even sleep
Pursuit of happiness got you life locked up under marshall law
You got everything to lose so you’re paranoid about some fatal flaw

5:30 get up, run run run
Then you work eight hours
Slaving underneath the gun
Little world is based on lies lies lies lies lies lies lies lies lies
Ooooooooooooooooooooh!
Always rushing but you’re never ever satisfied

Healthy body sick mind
You’re working overtime
Healthy body sick mind
Too hectic, too hectic
Healthy body sick mind
Why don’t you just unwind?
It’s just a matter of time
Sick body sick mind!

Have a Rockin’ FACS day!
